Anders Jallai´s Trilogy about the Cold War in Sweden

After I read Mi´s interview with Anders Jallai I became curious about the novels and when I was home with a cold recently I decided to download them. The fact that the books are based on the author´s experiences and research make them extra exciting. In addition, all italic sections in the novels taken from authentic documents. But, as the author points out, everything in the novels is not true.

Inside Spy (Swedish title: Spionen på FRA)

The first novel, Inside Spy, is mainly about submarine violations and but also about spies in the Swedish intelligence service. The main character, Anton Modin, lost his family in the Estonia disaster and quit his job as intelligence officer. Now, 14 years later, he gets involved in the search for a Soviet submarine, which according to rumors, was sunk by the Swedish Navy in the 1980s. There are many who tries to stop the search, but Modin has nothing left to lose. He is on a mission to find the truth.

I get a Jan Guillou (Swedish author) vibe by this novel, and it also makes me think about the former Soviet spy Alexander Zalachenko from Stieg Larsson´s novels.

The Traitor (Swedish title: Landsförrädaren)

Jallai´s second novel, The Traitor, focuses on the assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, or Paul Olofsson as he is called in the novel. All real people have fictional names, but it is not difficult to identify them. Just like in the first novel it is Anton Modin and his friends Bergman, Axman and Nuder who are searching for the truth. And conspiracy theories are in focus here as well.

The same day as I read the novel there is another article in a Swedish newspaper questioning who was really behind the assassination. It really makes you wonder what really happened, especially considering all information Jallai has access to.

The Nato Agent (Swedish title: Natoagenten)

The third and final part, The Nato Agent, is about the Estonia disaster. Anton Modin is looking for the true reason why the ship sank. He will not let anyone stand in his way; he is going to find his family.

Some questions are answered, but it makes you wonder what the truth really is…
